As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
